I do not think I ever had leisure to gather my thoughts. Maybe that is a good thing. Since winter, all the days have been drifting by as if in a fog. The only thing that tells me time has passed is the slow arrival of spring, and then summer. Each night I welcome the soundless bliss of nothingness. The bad dreams are gone. I no longer dream about Sigge or Gisle. I haven’t even seen Ragna’s dumbstruck face once in my dreams. Only small glimpses of my surroundings swirl before me. The only thing constant is the smell of latrine. It grows fainter as what I believe to be days go by. Sometimes I see myself as from the outside. I see my own body lying on a bed of blackened, grimy furs, sweat trickling down my forehead and my hair all tangled. None of the men came back that night. I don't know whether they found the cave or not, and I fear that I will never find out. Not that it matters. There were no people there. I don't even know if the cave really exists. The skies were clear as evening approached. They came back in the evening the first day without any news. The men had been riding all day searching for tracks, but not even a single footprint was found. Steingrim had a small deer across the back of his horse, but it was a meager comfort. The next three days were just as the first. Bad weather continued to ruin the possibilities for good tracks, and snow kept falling in a steady pace which never seemed to stop. We burnt the bodies the following day without much ceremony. A huge heap of wood was stacked about three feet high, and the bodies laid on top. I had the terrible dream again yesterday. This time, Blanka wasn't with me. Apparently, last night's effort wasn't good enough for grandmother, and seeing the weave in the light of day, I must agree. The lines are uneven, and I haven't managed to follow the pattern. I have to pull out all the thread and do it over again. And that without any breakfast. I get to think a lot whilst I work, and I remember my trip yesterday. It's been twelve days since anyone has seen either Sigge nor Gisle. Everyone has silently agreed that they have died somehow. Father has given up searching for them, but has sent word to Granvin that two of his thralls have escaped. My Bio

My father's name is Helgi Ingolfsson, son of Ingolf Grjotvardsson. He is a descendant of Grjotgard Herlaugsson, earl of Hálogaland. My mother is Ása Asgautsdottir, daughter of Asgaut Skaftason, former owner of Steinsnes.

I was born on the farm Steinsnes in Norway five winters prior to the battle of Svolder, where king Olaf Tryggvason was slain. I believe the Christians would call it the year 995 Anno Domini. Since then, Norway has been under danish rule, not that it has had much impact on these parts.

Steinsnes lies in Sparbyggjafylki, a day's journey west of the Trondheimsfjord. To the east rise the mountains of Kjolen, beyond which lies the vast forests of Jamtaland.
